Designer Q&A with Rocky Star

October 7, 2016

What's your name and the name of your collection?

My name is Rocky Star, and my latest collection was called ‘Shringara’

 Where did you grow up?

I was born and brought up in Mumbai, India

Where and what did you study?

I studied Fashion Designing at JD Institute of Fashion Technology.

Where can we find your label?

My label Rocky Star is available in India, our flagship store being in Mumbai and the Middle East.

What or who inspired you to go into fashion?

No one as such inspired me to get into fashion. I know a lot of my contemporaries who were inspired by Hollywood, Bollywood or a certain personality and that’s how they discovered their passion for fashion. For me, it was my genuine love for clothes, colours and textures that made me want to do what I do today.I came from a family where my father and one of my brothers were chartered accountants, and another brother into the construction business, so I followed in step behind them.I studied commerce as a student, but my heart was not in it. I was always interested in clothes, and used to be a stylist for friends and family. After a lot of persuasion, my family supported me and let me go ahead with my desire to pursue fashion. I underwent formal training after that, following which I worked for a few years and now I am where I am today.

What's your biggest aspiration?

My biggest aspiration is for my brand to be recognized globally. I have been around and seen the world, and now I want the world to see my brand!

Describe your style, In terms of your collections is there a trademark style, method or key fabric you would like to be known for?

Women of today inspire me and you can see a reflection of that in my work. Feminine and strong; that is my style quotient. There is no trademark. My aesthetic is storytelling. Every collection I have done has been inspired by my personal experiences and my journey, making every collection very special.

Experimenting with colours, fabrics and textures; taking something conventional and depicting it in the most unconventional manner is something I find exciting and love about fashion.Having the element of mystery and surprise is extremely essential to my work; it helps me in redefining the parameters of beauty and fashion every step along the way.

What can we expect from your next collection?

It is too soon to reveal details about my next collection; all I can say is that it is going to be an exciting new spin on glamour.

Which city inspires you?

London, because of its architectural beauty and its dominance in the world of fashion but for me as a designer, it is important to stay close to my Indian roots.

How do you like to relax?

I like to spend time at the gym. Other than that I enjoy spending time with some close friends having coffee and conversations.

Where's your favourite place to eat?

Home. I travel quite frequently so when I am in the city, there is nothing better than a home cooked meal. Living in Mumbai, the street food here also has a very special place in my heart.
